I learned about the education system in Senegal under the French.

Please elaborate on the education system. I believe the speaker mentioned something about the segregation of social classes in reference to education, as an educator do you feel it had a positive and or negative effect on society?

Much of the discussion during this meeting was on the language of instruction. Arabic is usually consider the official language in the public schools but, French is more widely used in the Universities. French is also considered a more elitist language here. So it has created a type of social barrier to education; especially in the sciences.

I'm not sure that the French actually wanted college students to become scientist. The education system they imposed actually used language as a barrier to education for those in a lower social class.
